It is amazing to think how far Gatwick Airport has come since its small beginning in 1930. It was an area of flatlands and Ronald waters, who was an enthusiastic aviator decided that it would be idea to build an airport on. He did just that and Surrey Aero Club had an airfield from where they ran pleasure flights. After a few years he lost interest and sold up. The man who bought the land was Morris Jackaman and he set up the beginnings of the Gatwick airport that is there today. It was a far cry from the travel companies, shops, waiting rooms and car hire companies that you see there today.
To start with he had to apply for a commercial license and then a new railway station opened nearby allowing people to reach the airport easily. In 1936 a terminal building was opened. It is called the Beehive terminal and nowadays is seen as a strange creative artefact rather than practical building housing staff and passengers. The airport was a great success and after a start of just having flights to Paris it quickly sent people to four other destinations by the end of its first year. The rest, as they say, is history, but when you are bustling about getting stressed about luggage collection, customs, car hire and duty free, remember what a fantastic history the site has had and how one man and his business partner probably never imagined what a successful place Gatwick airport is today.

If you’re anything like me then you know how relaxing it is to sit back in your favorite chair while sipping on a nice glass of whiskey, but do you really know all of what goes in to the making of whiskey? Because I didn’t until I took a tour of Glengoyne Distillery, so I’m sure there are plenty of other whiskey lovers out there who have no idea how it is made. So here is your chance, there is no better place to experience it all than while you are taking a trip around Glasgow, Scotland. And don’t worry, although you do get to sample the product while taking the tour, you won’t get too drunk to make use of your Glasgow airport car hire so you can still drive there and back.
It is a very affordable way to spend some of your day as well, with a 45 minute tour starting at £5.50 which includes a taste of their 10 year old single malt whiskey. Or if you are really interested in their products you can take a more in-depth tour such as the master blender tour where you get to create your very own blended whiskey. Don’t forget to visit the shop afterward so you can enjoy their products while relaxing at your hotel in the evening.
Glengoyne Distillery is about a 30 minute drive from Glasgow so getting a car hire from Glasgow airport is probably your best bet at getting there and back easily.
